Overview
In this 3-hour, beginner level course, Asia Place, LPCC-S, trains providers on the background and basics of DBT. Examples, case studies and practice exercises are integrated into the lecture to illustrate and reinforce the material. Topics include: the history of the therapy; types of diagnoses DBT treats; symptoms and behaviors DBT can be used with; what it looks like when doing DBT in individual sessions; how to start and run a DBT Skills Group; and basic skills from the manual and how to teach them to patients.

Objectives
  1. Explain the bio social model the therapy is based on and compare/ contrast under-regulation and over-regulation traits.
  2. Identify targeted populations, symptoms and behaviors where DBT can be used.
  3. Assess and diagnose Borderline Personality Disorder and explain how/why to use DBT with this diagnosis
  4. Apply the goals of this therapy in patient treatment plans.
  5. Use the resources (Diary Card Tool and Behavioral Chain Analysis Tool) and teach patients to use them.
  6. Conceptualize how individual sessions look from DBT theoretical orientation.
  7. Explain how to set up DBT skills group.
  8. Explain mindfulness and why it is a core foundation and benefit to DBT.
  9. Identify 7 mindfulness skills and how to teach to patients.
  10. Explain 3 states of mind and 3 techniques to get patient into Wise mind.

About the presenter
​Asia Place, LPCC-S
has been using DBT with clients, in some capacity, for ~8 years now. Her training has included:
  • 2-day certified training by The Linehan Institute, Behavioral Tech
  • Mentored by a colleague who trained under Dr. Marsha Linehan for two years
  • Lead and co-lead a weekly 1 hour DBT-informed skills group in an eating disorder Partial Hospital Program for a ~4 years 
  • Lead and co-lead a weekly outpatient 1.5 hour DBT skills group for ~2 years
  • Was assistant director of a DBT-Intensive Outpatient Program for eating disorders 
  • Was in a DBT consult group for ~4 years
  • Utilizes  DBT-informed therapy with current clients​

Continuing Education
Columbus Behavioral Health is approved by Ohio Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board to offer Continuing Education for this course. Approval #MCST01217863

Ohio counselors, social workers and marriage and family therapists will receive 3 CEUs for full completion of course, including evaluation and post-test score of at least 80%. Certificate will be emailed after successful completion of the course and credits entered into CE Broker.

The Ohio Nursing Board accepts CE credits issued by this board.

Psychologists and out of state providers will receive a certificate of completion they can submit to their board for consideration of CE credits but approval is not guaranteed.
